Baringo Land Restoration Project
Objective
To rehabilitate degraded landscapes in Baringo County, Kenya, by restoring soil health, increasing vegetation cover, and improving livelihoods for local communities.
Background
Baringo has suffered from severe land degradation due to overgrazing, erratic rainfall, and the spread of the invasive Prosopis juliflora (Mathenge) species. This has led to the loss of productive pasturelands, negatively impacting pastoralist communities that rely on livestock for their livelihoods.

Actions Taken
- Establishing community-led restoration sites where indigenous vegetation is replanted to restore biodiversity.
- Implementing sustainable land management practices such as controlled grazing, agroforestry, and soil conservation techniques.
- Removing invasive Prosopis juliflora species and converting them into useful products like animal feed and biochar.
- Training local farmers and pastoralists on climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land use.

Impact
- Over 500 hectares of degraded land have been restored, improving soil fertility and water retention.
- Increased pasture availability, supporting the livelihoods of over 1,000 pastoralists.
- Enhanced climate resilience and biodiversity conservation in the region.
