Invasive species management
Prosopis juliflora, locally known as “Mathenge or Promie” is among the top 100 most invasive and damaging species globally. It is native to Central America and the Caribbean and was introduced in Baringo in the early 1980s to mitigate desertification. It has however spread rapidly over time invading farmlands, grazing lands impoverishing pastoral communities’ livelihoods
It has displaced native biodiversity with individual Prosopis trees consuming about 1- 20 litres of water / day, threatening the ground water resources. Presently, over 20,000 hectares are covered by Prosopis in Baringo
We are working with the affected communities to restore their land back to productivity and enhance livelihoods by clearing Prosopis and replacing it with native species, grasses and crops.
