It is native to Central America and the Caribbean and was introduced in Baringo in the early 1980s to mitigate desertification. It has however spread rapidly over time invading farmlands, grazing lands impoverishing pastoral communities\u2019 livelihoods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ilchamus community yet to be compensated over damage by &#039;Mathenge&#039; weed\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qJAfrcIxCZY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It has displaced native biodiversity with individual Prosopis trees consuming about 1- 20 litres of water \/ day, threatening the ground water resources.
